This may sound like a surprising salad combination, but these two summertime stars—fresh basil and strawberries—pair deliciously well in a pretty first course.
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
8 cups torn romaine lettuce
2 cups sliced strawberries (1 pound)
1/2 cup vertically sliced Vidalia or other sweet onion
1/4 cup torn fresh basil
How to Make It
Combine olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl; stir well with a whisk. Add romaine lettuce, sliced strawberries, sliced onion, and torn basil; toss gently to coat. Serve salad immediately.

This is absolutely delicious and a welcome change from the usual boring salad. I made it two weeks ago and it got such a rousing reception from my family that I'm making it again tonight to accompany a Garlic-Herb roasted chicken!
Thought it was good, although not as good as some strawberry-spinach salads I've had. I used a Walla Walla sweet onion instead of Vidalia. The basil was almost a little overpowering. That said, we finished the whole big bowl!
We liked this. Changed the dressing by using walnut oil instead of olive. Very pretty presentation, nice surprise to folks not expecting the berries. Served outdoors as first course to CL's pasta with zucchini & almonds.
This was so easy to make and really tasty. My husband and I added a bit of leftover feta cheese which gave it a nice touch too. I may soak the strawberries for a few minutes in the dressing next time to give them a little more of the balsamic flavor. Would also be really good with some sliced almonds.
