Start with a whole chicken, cut up, and simmer in a homemade barbecue sauce of ketchup, cola, cider vinegar and a splash of bourbon for a Southern barbecue flavor.

How to Make It

Step 1

Stir together first 4 ingredients in a small bowl. Sprinkle over chicken. Place chicken in a single layer in a lightly greased 6-qt. slow cooker.

Step 2

Whisk together cola soft drink and next 4 ingredients in a small bowl. Slowly pour mixture between chicken pieces (to avoid removing spices from chicken). Place lemon slices in a single layer on top of chicken.

Step 3

Cover and cook on HIGH 5 hours (or on LOW 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours) or until done.

Step 4

Transfer chicken pieces to a serving platter; discard lemon slices. Skim fat from pan juices in slow cooker. Pour pan juices over chicken; serve immediately.

Step 5

Step 6

Slow-cooked Barbecued Chicken Sandwiches: Prepare recipe as directed through Step Remove chicken from slow cooker, and let cool slightly (about 10 to 15 minutes). Discard lemons. Skin, bone, and shred chicken. Skim fat from pan juices, and pour over chicken. Serve chicken over sliced Sweet Potato Cornbread. Top with Pickled Peppers & Onions and Simple Slaw.

Step 7

Note: To make ahead, cool shredded chicken completely. Freeze in an airtight container up to 3 months.

You rated your own recipe 3 stars, not the BBQ Chicken recipe.  I don't understand why people do this.  Please only rate a recipe if you make it as it is stated.

My family loved the barbecued chicken. I omitted the bourbon and it was delicious. The meat fell off the bones. I definitely would suggest making this. It was so easy.

Mmmmm. My husband loved this recipe. It is especially good with the recommended sweet potato cornbread and pickled peppers. We ate this meal at home on a Saturday evening during football season. I liked that I could sit back and let the slow cooker do its thing, keeping me out of the kitchen so I could enjoy watching football. I made the pickled peppers and sweet potato cornbread ahead of time. A perfect, delicious, low maintenance meal for a football-watching Saturday night.

I'm cooking this now... Smells good! Using chicken breasts & half a lemon...It was done in two hours. I cut up the chicken and caramelized it in the sauce. Delicious! My 16 year old ate two helpings-she loved it!

I didn't find it lemony at all! This was delicious. I made it with chicken breast on the bone and served with mashed potatoes (cheesy cornbread for son who hates potatoes) and salad. We found it a tad dry, as we do most things in the crock pot, but next time will double the sauce and shred the cooked chicken into it. Everyone gave it two thumbs up! My house smells sooooo good......

I will make this, but leave out the lemon. That makes sense if the complaint if people are complaining the taste is to lemony.
