Combine first 7 ingredients in a large saucepan, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and cook vinegar mixture 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in pear. Partially cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer 45 minutes or until most of liquid evaporates. Serve relish warm with chicken or pork.
I added fresh banana peppers and used home grown pears. Interestingly, I looked at the recipe directions AFTER chopping and combining, thinking this was a "relish". Didn't have time to cook it so I served it to my family raw. Their unanimous decision was DO NOT COOK it the next time, either. This will become a fall favorite as I look to use my bountiful harvest of pears and peppers.
