How to Make It

Step 1

Spread about 1 teaspoon mustard over each bread slice. Place 1 cheese slice on each of 4 bread slices. Divide ham evenly over cheese. Cover with the remaining 4 bread slices, mustard sides down. Combine milk and egg whites in a shallow dish. Dip both sides of each sandwich into milk mixture.

Step 2

Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Cook sandwiches for 3 minutes on each side or until lightly browned. Sprinkle each sandwich with 1/2 teaspoon sugar; top each with 1 tablespoon jam.

I loved this recipe. So good! And my sandwich did have a nice light crunch on the outside, Will definitely do this again.

Agreed, this doesn't have the crunch I expected, but still a tasty and quick upscale sandwich. I put the jam on the inside but otherwise made as directed. Any suggestions on how to crisp it up are appreciated.

A good start, but I was still missing the Monte Cristo's signature crunch that comes with the usual deep fry. If you'd like another option, try this recipe for something that is still light and healthy, but is closer to the original intent. Made it last night, and it was great! http://thelawstudentswife.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-monte-cristo.html
