Even while unwinding at his favorite watering hole, Steinbeck didn't stray form his salt-of-the-earth ethos, favoring the jack rose, a workingman's cocktail fueled by applejack brandy (aka "Jersey lightning").
3 tablespoons (1 1/2 oz.) applejack
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon (1/2 oz.) grenadine
Garnish: lemon twist
How to Make It
Combine applejack, lemon juice, and grenadine in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Cover with lid, and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe glass, and garnish, if desired.
