If I can give zero stars or negative, I would. This recipe is disgusting. I normally don’t even follow recipes but I wanted to try to make chicken like Popeyes and this trash is nothing even remotely close to it. Wayyyyy too much seasoning and the breading is wayyyyy too thick. Emphasis on both “wayyyyy”s. I literally wasted all those ingredients for nothing because as soon as I took a bite, I decided to throw it in the dumpster for the raccoons, who knows if they’ll even eat it. Went right ahead and ordered me a family meal from Popeyes right after. This should be taken down off the internet. Don’t waste your time and ingredients.
Totally agree with the bad reviews!
We really like this recipe the only thing the first time I made it I used the recommended amount of salt of 2 1/2 Tablespoons way way to much salt cut it down to 1 Tablespoon salt and now it is great! When I make it I use boneless chicken breasts 6 or 7 large breasts cut in half so I get between 12 to 14 pieces of chicken per recipe! It does this amount of chicken with no problem!!
No where near Popeyes. My husband and I were disappointed as I followed the recipe. It was edible but should NOT be labeled "Copycat Popeyes". Not worth wasting the ingredients.
The only changes we made was not using as much hot sauce and instead of peanut oil we used vegetable oil. It was good but not as good as Popeyes, Close though. Overall it was pretty good though definitely would recommend to a friend.
This is nothing like the Popeyes recipe.
!. Popeyes fries in beef tallow not peanut oil
2. it is not marinated in buttermilk- it is injection marinated with salt water
3. The chicken is marinated in a mild or hot seasoning and tumbled in a drum marinater and rests overnight.
4. the crunchy batter with "cornflakes" is achieved by using a very low gluten flour and is banged together with another piece of chicken and then bounced off the back of the fryer.
Tasted nothing like popeyes. Total waste of ingredients. I peeled the terrible breading off and used the chicken for burritos.
I used 3 c flour...it wasn't bad, but it wasn't spicy enough. With the price of groceries, I don't have $$$ to waste, so what I did last time was>>>soaked my chicken in buttermilk overnight. Drained it, set it on a plate to let it dry a little. I mixed the flour and seasonings, then took out a cup and mixed it with 1/2 c panko bread crumbs. I poured a can of el pato into a bowl. So I wouldn't need to use an entire bottle of cooking oil, I pressure cooked my chicken for 10 minutes, then cooled it in the refrigerator in the morning, so that when I was ready to start it for dinner, the chicken wouldn't fall apart. Before I started to fry, I heated my oil on the stove (I used 1/2 a bottle of canola) in a sauce pan. I dipped my cooked chicken in the seasoned flour, then el pato, then the flour mixed with the panko. Then I fried it until crispy. This is how I'll do it from now on...I liked it.
Too much breading; did not taste like Popeyes
Four cups of flour for 8 pieces of chicken??? That should be your first clue that there's something wrong with this recipe. On the plus side it didn't taste bad, but it wasn't Popeye's by a long shot. I doubled it because I had about 18 pieces of chicken & threw away way too much marinade, batter & flour mixture. The proportions were way off.
My husband loves Popeye's fried chicken so I was so excited about this recipe. I followed the recipe exactly and it was not like Popeye's. As other review said, WAY TOO MUCH BREADING. Not nearly enough heat or spice in the breading. Won't do this again - just go to Popeye's! I fry home made chicken tenders all the time, just going to stick with that.
This isn't anything like Popeyes Chicken! Breading was way too thick after dredging in flour once (not twice like the recipe says) and tasted like flour even after I added more of each spice. All in all I would not use this recipe again as I feel like I just wasted an entire chicken.
I made this recipe on 2/24/21. It tasted nothing like Popeye's recipe.
There was much too much breading.
There was much too little spice.
It was VERY expensive to make, given that I needed 1/2 gallon of one time use peanut oil.
Just go to Popeye's ☺️
Our favorite fast food is Popeyes chicken tenders, which are getting more expensive every other time we drive thru...... I tried this recipe last night but used boneless, skinless breasts cut lengthwise into 1/2 inch cutlets. I halved the amount of chicken to 1.5 pounds of breasts and halved all ingredients as well. Marinated in buttermilk mixture (which is key) for ~36 hours. I also added a tablespoon of baking powder in the flour dredging mixture.
Chicken breasts cooked for 6-9 minutes depending on thickness. Turned out juicy, tender, full of flavor, and very crispy! So worth the effort! The next time I make this I will pound the chicken before marinating and cut soak time to no more than 4 hours because those chicken cravings come up frequently!
