My mother found this recipe in an old cookbook when I was young. In that one, the fat was Crisco rather than butter, but otherwise the same. As far as our family is concerned, it's the best simple vanilla cake recipe out there. It's easy to remember, and variations with added fruit or zest or toppings are limitless. Adding lemon zest and blueberries and making it into 2 loaves has always been a favorite. When my kids were younger, they often asked for this cake topped with chocolate ganache for a birthday cake. It's still my go to recipe for a no fail and delicious cake or cupcakes.
