How to Make It

Step 1

Cook benne seeds in a large heavy skillet over medium heat, stirring often, 8 minutes or until seeds begin to turn brown. Remove from skillet.

Step 2

Cook sugar and 2 Tbsp. water in skillet over low heat, stirring constantly, 10 minutes or until sugar is melted. Quickly stir in benne seeds and vanilla. Pour onto a well-buttered baking sheet. Quickly spread to 1/8-inch thickness, using a metal spatula. Cool completely (20 minutes). Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container.

loved this! We love this brittle...and now I can make it instead of buying it. Wonderfully easy. I would serve this at a small casual party/ dinner

This was delicious and fun to make...and I learned a lot about melting sugar. When it clumps up and you think you have ruined it, keep on stirring and the sugar will melt beautifully.

A classic recipe. I found I had to use medium heat to melt the sugar. Work fast after you add the seeds. This stuff is addictive

The sugar never melted to the consistency that I look for in a brittle. The benne seeds were toasted properly and the "brittle" has a nutty taste but it is overly sweet due to the sugar's consistency.
