I didn't think the apples added to this recipe. I like Magic Cookie Bars better.
I'm a huge chocolate fan but didn't care for the taste of chocolate with the apples the first time I made these. They were ... OK ... but I decided to try something else the next time I made them.
I eliminated the chocolate chips altogether, and I added cinnamon chips. So my layers were: graham cracker crust, butterscotch chips, cinnamon chips, coconut, apples, and pecans, drizzled on top with the sweetened condensed milk. YES! This combination of flavors worked for me.
The bottom line is: this is a great recipe to "play around" with, substituting things in and out of the layers according to your taste. As long as you keep the general "texture" and measurements close to the original, it should work.
Really tasty and easy to make. They're a nice combination of textures. I didn't have any butterscotch morsels on hand so I drizzled some caramel over the chocolate chip layer instead. I took them to work and everyone raved over them.
Made this bars for a Labor Day pool party. Everybody love them, they were moist and yummy. I will make then again:)
