This is a great toffee recipe and I make it every year at the holidays. You will definitely get requests to make it again if you bring it to a party. I tweaked the recipe by using roasted almonds and chocolate chips. It costs the same to buy the almonds already roasted so it saves time. There are a lot of chocolate chips out there that are of really good bittersweet chocolate so try some out to find one you like - this also saves time and more importantly, the mess of chopping chocolate! With a little patience during the heating process you will have a delicious, and addictive, treat for the holidays. I agree with gardenkim that you need to have a candy themometer to make this. Also I would recommend having all ingredients fully prepped and in arm's reach before you start making it. Once you start you really can't stop so put a chunk of uniterrupted time aside or you'll be sorry. Enjoy!
This toffee is delicious!! It did take a lot longer than stated to come to 300 degrees on the candy thermomator but you have to wait for it to reach 300! It's definitly worth the wait!
This was so easy I'll make it again for sure. I've always steered away from candy making, lava like hot molten sugar and all but this was super easy and quick. It is so much more impressive as a holiday gift than cookies. I did use pecans instead of almonds because we have a pecan tree and I'm always trying to use them up. It gave the recipe a southern flair. I used a candy thermometer and would recommend that you do if attempting this recipe.
This recipe is fantastic! I did tweak it a little to make it less time consuming. I sprinkled the chocolate chips on top and let them melt on the hot toffee. I also used slivered almonds and pressed them in to the melted chocolate. I have never made candy before and I have now been asked to make it again.
