The Pleasures of Pumpkin Bread
I recently volunteered at my church to be on a team of bread bakers. We bake loaves to distribute to visitors each Sunday as a sign of hospitality, and I decided that the perfect way to show hospitality in October would be loaves of pumpkin bread.
This is one of my favorite things to make in the fall because it's a bread that just feels like fall. And while it's baking, my kitchen is filled with the spicy aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. It's enough to almost get me in the holiday spirit! And there are a number of options, too. You can make loaves that are topped with pecans, filled with chocolate chips or covered in a streusel topping. I used a recipe from Real Simple that has four different spices and is sweetened with both sugar and molasses.
Pumpkin bread is great for breakfast, toasted with a little bit of melted butter, for a snack in the afternoon with a cup of tea, or even for dessert. I think I'll probably make a few extra loaves and keep some for myself. It freezes well, so maybe I can get a little ahead on my holiday baking.
