On August 7th, I saw a tweet from fellow food writer and blogger, Jennifer Perillo: "He's gone. And my heart is shattered in a million pieces." Jennie's beloved husband and devoted father to their two little girls, Mikey, had suddenly, shockingly died. Just like that.
Food bloggers around the country held virtual hands as we cried for Jennie's terrible loss. We stumbled into our kitchens and tried to cook; we sat at our computers and tried to write. But our brains were muddled by the incomprehensibility of this loss. It didn't make sense, and in its midst nothing else did either.
And then Jennie gave all of us a beautiful gift: Mikey's favorite peanut butter cream pie. She asked us to all make a peanut butter cream pie and share it with someone we love then "hug them like there's no tomorrow because today is the only guarantee we can count on".
Across the blogosphere and across the world, we did what bloggers do: we cooked, we wrote, we photographed, we tweeted, and we posted. A group of bloggers got together and produced a moving tribute video all about peanut butter cream pies and cooking something special to show someone you love them.
So now, for Mikey, his two little girls, Jennie--and for you--go cook for someone you love with gratitude and appreciation.
