Here's your slice of inspiration for the week.
In a truly heartwarming act of kindness, 18-year-old Dalton Schaffer drove more than three hours to deliver a dying man’s favorite meal.
At the end of his shift at Steve’s Pizza in Battle Creek, Michigan, Schaffer drove through the night to Indianapolis, Indiana to deliver two pizzas to a cancer patient under hospice care.
Money was tight when the couple lived in Battle Creek 25 years ago. But every payday, Rich splurged on a pie from Steve’s.
“I can't possibly describe how delicious this pizza is,” Julie posted. “But several moves and all these years later, it is still the gold standard and we've never found a better pizza yet. Rich has frequently critiqued other pizza as ‘good but, it's no Steve's.’"
They were excited to visit Steve’s for Julie’s birthday this year, according to her post, but their plans were dashed when Rich’s health took a turn for the worse. He spent five days in the ICU before he learned his battle with cancer was coming to an end.
They headed home, where he began hospice care.
Unbeknownst to the couple, Julie’s dad called Steve’s Pizza. He told the manager (Shaffer) the story, hoping that a friendly text or card from his favorite pizza joint would lift Rich’s spirits.
Without hesitating, Shaffer asked for his usual order—he was going to drive the 220 miles as soon as he closed the restaurant.
“And so, while Rich and I slept, at 2:30 a.m., Dalton rolled into our driveway, left the car running and delivered two extra special pizzas to my waiting family,” Julie wrote. “He told them we were in his prayers, and offered to help in any way he could. My dad offered to put him up in a hotel, but he refused and immediately left for the return trip home because he had to work the next day.”
Julie’s post has been shared more than 4,000 times and people around the world have been inspired inspired by Shaffer’s delivery.
It just goes to show that a small acts of kindness can make a huge impact.
“Dalton brought our family so much joy—and the best pizza in the world—at a really difficult time. While ‘thank you’ hardly seems adequate—from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dalton from Steve's Pizza in Battle Creek, Michigan for making your epic middle of the night pizza delivery!”
