Everyone knows that Ree Drummond (a.k.a The Pioneer Woman) is chock full of genius cooking tips and tricks. Fans of her show also know that she loves a good potluck.

It should come as no surprise, then, that the Food Network star doesn’t serve run-of-the-mill potato salad at her annual Fourth of July shindig.

She includes a very special ingredient in her recipe: pepperoni.

You probably associate the topping with pizza, but we can totally see how the meaty addition would perfectly complement traditional potato salad’s other flavors.

Drummond told Us Weekly that she developed the recipe "because potato salad can be pretty boring and run of the mill,” so she thinks “it has to be very delicious."

Her Pepperoni Potato Salad recipe uses Yukon gold potatoes, marinara sauce, green olives, and pearls of mozzarella. She folds in the pepperoni, olives and mozzarella only after the dressing has been poured over the cooked potatoes.

The TV personality and cookbook author said she “thinks about bulk,” and what she can make in big foil pans.

She also said that—while classics like baked beans are essential—she also likes to make sure guests have lighter options like caprese salad.

“We always wind up with heavy sides and I like having the freshness and the basil flavor,” she said.
