There's no middle ground
Peeps: the marshmallow candy that you either love, or love to hate. Making their appearance like clockwork each spring, these squishy, pastel candies signal the arrival of Easter via the hyperactive children in fancy outfits who scarf them down with abandon. But for some reason, 2019 seems to be the year where Peeps have transcended their bird and bunny form to become something of a breakfast food.
For the latest such example, look no further than Peeps Cereal, a new Kellogg’s product set to hit store shelves. While most sugary breakfast cereals consider marshmallows as an add-on, they’re pretty much the entire raison-d’etre for this box of breakfast Peeps. The red, yellow, and blue Apple Jacks-esque rings carry a marshmallow taste. As if that weren’t enough, there are actual marshmallows in the cereal as well to really drive the point home.
According to an Instagram post by social media snack finders the MnMTwinz, who claim to have found the box they acquired on a pallet at Target, the cereal “literally does taste like Peeps Marshmallows; just without the sugar crystals.”
So in essence, you probably have already formed an opinion about whether or not you’re going to like Peeps cereal. The absence of fun animal shapes reminiscent of the candy itself may be disappointing to those who enjoy this saccharine seasonal treat for its aesthetic qualities, however.
Kellog’s Peeps cereal is a perfect part of a totally unbalanced breakfast that also includes coffee flavored with Peeps creamer for those looking for a festive way to spike their blood sugar at the start of the day.
There’s no word about where exactly (beyond Target) one can find this Easter candy conveniently disguised as a breakfast cereal, but you can be sure that it’ll only stick around for a limited time. Just don’t make any plans to give up sugar for lent.
