There were some strong feelings about chicken nuggets.
Tried-and-true comfort foods have their place. On those busy weeknights, we couldn’t be bigger fans of comforting casseroles, meal-prepped salads for lunch, and quick chicken dinners. But this week—maybe it’s the arrival Labor Day, or maybe it’s the start of Virgo season—the seasonal switch between summer and fall cooking has us feeling a little more adventurous in the kitchen.
While we love those classic ground beef, cheesy, saucy pastas and bakes, we gave a different palate of flavors a try with Mediterranean-inspired meals that bring a bright, herbaceous, tangy, nutty twist to get us out of our lunch and weeknight dinner ruts. A little fatigued of the basic zucchini we see so much of this time of year, we gave pattypan squash a try. On a quest to recreate Classic Sesame Noodles, a takeout-inspired favorite, we took a deep dive into everything you need to know about navigating the Asian noodle aisle at your supermarket or Asian grocer. And keeping with our spirit of adventure, we took a look at maca root, the latest buzzy health food trend that’s been hitting the market.
Every week has its ups and downs though. The news that all alcohol is bad for you hit us hard, and turns out there’s a lot we’re getting wrong about alcohol in general. Also in the category of major bummers… upon arriving home from vacay, one of our writers found that all of her chocolate souvenirs melted on the flight back (the horror!). She did find a way to repurpose them into some pretty awesome sweet treats though, so at least that story had a happy ending. Always look for the silver lining (i.e. the box of emergency brownie mix in your pantry), folks.
Another tasty win from this week: Turns out Sam’s Club chicken nuggets have an uncanny resemblance to Chick-fil-A’s, down to the dill flavor and distinctive bite-sized shape. Needless to say, we know what our new staple bulk purchase is going to be; we’re looking to these irresistible nuggs to get us through exceptionally hectic weeknights along with the disappointing Sundays when a Chick-fil-A craving strikes hard. Some readers had strong feelings about this discovery though—and a few just weren’t buying it. Our favorite reader comment: “Your chicken may be good...but don’t go comparing LEDs to sunshine.” And speaking of divisive topics, we also explored the whole New England versus Manhattan clam chowder debate and it stirred up a lot of emotions around the office. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.
As we head into Labor Day weekend, if you’ve got a long weekend, enjoy it—and don’t forget to take advantage of those sales!
