This Dad Built His Own Backyard Coffee Shop and It's Kind of Incredible
Living in the midst of a pandemic sucks. Beyond the toll of actual human lives and lost jobs, sitting at home for months on end without access to coffee shops and restaurants has been brutal. At the same time, the lockdown has given America’s dads plenty of time to turn their DIY and home improvement into a reality.
So it was perhaps inevitable that one very handy dad would take matters into his own hands and use some free time to build his very own backyard coffee shop. As shared on Twitter by proud daughter @Juliannastrid, her contractor father Ed used a bunch of scrap material from his work and lovingly repurposed the elements to create “La Vida” in the family’s backyard— all built from the ground(s) up. In typical dad fashion, he dedicated himself to working on bringing La Vida to life after work hours and on weekends, pouring all of his free time into the project.
As you can see from a quick walkthrough of his “crib”, this thing is far more legit than just putting a keurig in a treehouse. Beyond perfectly matching the aesthetics for a hip cafe and hangout spot (right down to the script “La Vida” on the chalkboard), it has some of the real-deal functionality you’d find in a coffee shop, too. There’s a fridge for cold beverages, burners to heat up pots of hot coffee, and even a display case for pastries. While you won’t find one of those fancy espresso machines, you’ve gotta cut the guy some slack given all of the other awesome flourishes you’d find in La Vida.
This quarantine project sounds like it was a dream come true for Ed—and the rest of his family. I’ve grown up watching my dad build amazing things around our house and for other people, he is truly an extraordinary builder," @Juliannastrid told House Beautiful. “He has always had a love for coffee and cozy spots and recently decided to fuel that love into something for his own backyard where the family and our guests can sit back, lounge, and bond."
Since La Vida (probably) won’t open to the public, you can check out more behind-the-scenes photos and live vicariously through Ed over at his new Instagram account. For all the other dads out there dreaming up their own woodworking projects for 2020, consider this your notice that the (coffee) bar has officially been raised.
