Dear Burger King: Please Let Us Eat Your Halloumi Burger
While it’s inarguably second (or even third) fiddle when it comes to nationwide fast food burger chains, there’s no question that Burger King has made an effort to innovate their offerings lately. Look no further than their Impossible Whopper, which is slowly rolling out nationwide.

From the looks of it, the Impossible Whopper isn’t the only meatless menu item that could be debuting at your local Burger King in the near future, either. Over in the UK, Burger King is testing a halloumi burger, bringing a patty forged from the very grillable goat and sheep’s milk-based cheese to the masses. According to the burger joint’s description, it’s served on “buttery brioche bun with freshly cut crisp lettuce, onions, tomatoes and creamy mayo, this new burger will ensure your love affair with halloumi gets even stronger.”
If you’re unfamiliar with halloumi, you may be scoffing at the idea of a literal cheese burger from a major fast food chain. But if a taste test conducted by some Brits who work for The Independent is any indication, the halloumi burger is surprisingly tasty, managing to not dry out or turn into a rubbery disc like fried cheeses often can.

For better or worse, the UK is just getting this cheesy creation for a limited time only. And us Americans—for now, at least—seem to be out of luck. It’s almost like Burger King thinks they can buy our complacency by giving us the Impossible Whopper.
And that’s why I say to Burger King: give us the halloumi burger! I still don’t know entirely what it is or how it works, but I think I speak for many Americans when I say that the chance to eat fried food and pretend that it’s healthy because it’s vegetarian is pretty much a dream come true. I don’t know if I’ll like it, but I demand the right to make that determination with my own tastebuds. If you can find a way to fit convincing fake meat in a Whopper, I’m sure you can figure out how to pull this off.
