Rather Sweet Key Lime Pie
I wasn't actually on vacation last week, but at the International Association of Culinary Professionals conference in Austin, Texas. But when else are you likely to try desserts at every meal other than a vacation or a culinary conference?
On Saturday a couple of us drove from Austin into the Hill Country of central Texas and went to Fredericksburg--one of the most charming little towns I have ever been to! Main Street was lined with antique and gift shops, boutiques, and, of course, bakeries, restaurants and beer gardens. (The town began as a German settlement.)
While we were in town, we ate lunch at the Rather Sweet Bakery & Cafe, owned by our new friend, Rebecca Rather, aka The Pastry Queen. We didn't really have much room left after a delicious lunch of sandwiches, soups, and salads, but how can you pass up a dessert from the Pastry Queen herself? There were three of us, so we split a key lime tart and a butterscotch brownie. I know it will be hard to believe, but the three of us could not finish all of our two desserts! Not from lack of trying, I assure you! These are Texas-size portions and they were both Texas-size grand! Delish in every single bite!
If you find yourself in Austin, you should not miss a day trip to Fredericksburg and a trip to the Rather Sweet Bakery & Cafe. Leave a little bit of time for walking around and shopping before you get in your car to head home or you will be in a sugar coma. If you can't make it to Fredericksburg, you can always get a copy of one of the Pastry Queen's cookbooks and eat dessert like you're on vacation.
