Cast iron doesn't rust because it's old or inferior; it rusts because of the way it was cared for or stored. For example, letting it soak in the sink overnight, letting it air dry, or washing it in the dishwasher. To remove the rust, use steel wool or a very fine-grade sandpaper to scour it off, and then re-season the pan.
