If you find yourself with a huge chocolate craving and little to satisfy it, you might be tempted to splurge at some fast food place or run to the store for a sub par dessert option. Don't do it! There are better homemade options out there, trust me. Now, I've tried a lot of mug cakes and mug brownies in my day, but I had yet to land upon one that was truly perfect, and in my opinion, this one really is.

This dessert is so simple and fast. It only takes one minute to stir up all of the ingredients and another minute to cook it in the microwave. Yes, that's right, the microwave. We're not fussing with the oven today, although if you use an oven safe dish you can definitely do it that way if you love getting those crispy edges to your brownies. But honestly, who needs the oven when the microwave makes brownies look and taste this good?


You only need a few ingredients, and these are ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry, except maybe the cocoa powder, unless you're like me and put cocoa powder in everything. It's definitely earned it's spot as the MVP in my morning smoothie, I'll just say that. What this batter lacks though, is eggs. I have found in my microwave mug dessert-making experience, that eggs can sometimes create a spongy texture. So this recipe is sans eggs, and I think it turned out just fine. When you've assembled your ingredients (recipe is at the bottom), add your ingredients to a microwave safe mug of your choice. A standard size mug works perfectly here.


Try your best not to drink the batter from the cup before you microwave it, but at least take a moment here to lick the spoon! Before you microwave your cup, gently stir in chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks, and then sprinkle a few lightly on top.


Microwave for 45-60 seconds. Because microwaves vary, it's worth it to check it after 45 seconds for doneness. The texture should be cake-like but also fudgy on top. For me, 60 seconds was perfect. What you end up with is a piping-hot indulgent chocolate experience that leaves that I-can't-believe-this-came-from-the-microwave impression. It will be really hot at first, so definitely let it cool for a few minutes before spooning some ice cream on top and having at it.   • 2 1/2 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp canola, vegetable, or coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • small handful of chocolate chips
  • Optional: ice cream or whipped cream

Stir together all of the ingredients in a microwave-safe mug except for the chocolate chips. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and sprinkle a few on top of the batter. Put the mug into the microwave for 45-60 seconds. Let it cool for a few minutes, top with some ice cream or whipped cream if desired, then grab a spoon and enjoy!
