How to Make Perfect Mashed Potatoes
However you enjoy your potatoes, homemade versions will always be the best. Follow these 5 simple steps to achieve the warm, buttery, creamy goodness that is Perfect Mashed Potatoes from Southern Living's Home Cooking Basics.
Perfect Mashed Potatoes
Yukon gold potatoes yield a texture that's just right for holding a pool of flavorful gravy or melted butter.
Bring to a Boil
Bring cubed potatoes, 1 tsp. salt, and cold water to cover to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low.
Cook potatoes 16 to 20 minutes or until fork-tender. (A fork is easily inserted through the center of the potato without having to use force.)
Drain potatoes. Return potatoes to Dutch oven. Cook until water evaporates and potatoes look dry. Move potatoes to one side of pan. Add butter, half-and-half, cream cheese, pepper, and remaining salt to other side of pan. Cook 1 to 2 minutes or until butter is melted.
Mash potatoes with a potato masher or hand-held electric mixer to desired degree of smoothness.
Alternative Way to Mash
If you prefer, you may also use a potato ricer for super creamy mashed potatoes.
