Hoisin is an Asian sauce frequently used when roasting or grilling meat.

If you don't have any on hand, try combining: 1 cup (minus 3 tablespoons) thick barbecue sauce, 3 tablespoons molasses, 4 teaspoons soy sauce, 4 teaspoons yeast extract, and 2 1/2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder. You'll end up with about 1 cup sauce.

Grilled Shrimp-and-Plum Skewers with Sweet Hoisin Sauce is a great example of a recipe where this substitution would work just fine.
