Celebrate Heart Month
February is American Heart Month, and as it draws to a close, we aren't about to forget about all of the easy heart-healthy diet choices that can improve our well-being all year long. We talked a lot about easy ways to swap out unhealthy foods for healthy options and how to incorporate a heart-healthy meal plan with Cooking Light's Simple Swaps. To raise awareness for National Heart Month locally, MyRecipes.com and students on the APhA-ASP Patient Care Committees at the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, joined together this month to hand out samples of heart-healthy recipes and encourage students to make heart-healthy eating choices.
Students set up a booth with free cups of White Bean and Turkey Chili and Tomato-Basil Soup soup for those who passed by. Hey, when you're a college student, free food is good food, right? But when it's Cooking Light's heart-healthy chili and piping-hot tomato soup, you can't go wrong. As students stopped by the table, they received free samples of the soups along with copies of the recipes.
Soup is a great, healthy option during the cold months, but it's also so easy to love these chicken dishes as a part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Because caring for your heart is such an important part of living a healthy lifestyle, check out the info-graphic below from MediFast which shows some of the best healthy and antioxidant-rich foods you can eat to care for your heart. And hey, if it means one more glass of red wine this week, what's not to like?

Let's all take a moment and appreciate (from the bottom of our hearts!) what our hearts do for us everyday. From that place of thankfulness, we hope it's a lot easier to make heart-healthy decisions. What you feed your body isn't just about calorie counting and dieting and whether you can get your bikini body by spring, but it's about making sure your body has everything it needs to keep you healthy and strong so you can balance the stresses of life and turn your daily meals into a wonderful way to love and care for yourself. Happy Cooking!
