Dear Kellogg's, Cereal Doesn't Belong on Avocados (Plus 5 Ways to Use Corn Flakes That Actually Make Sense)
Kellogg's is catching some heat for its new advertising campaign that suggests topping an avocado with feta cheese and Corn Flakes cereal... probably because that's just plain weird. Avoid making the same mistake with these 5 shamelessly unhip recipes that will put your Corn Flakes to good use.
Kellogg's in the UK and Ireland is receiving social backlash for its new advertising campaign, titled #BecauseYum, aimed at encouraging customers to branch out beyond breakfast and try utilizing their cereal in inventive ways.
While the premise of the campaign makes a lot of sense considering the continual mass decline in breakfast cereal sales, Kellogg's may have tried just a little too hard to hop on the trend train with their latest attempt to combat dropping popularity. The #BecauseYum campaign, which officially launched September 26th, has received raised Internet eyebrows since being promoted across Kellogg's UK and Ireland social media channels. So far, they've suggested some rather questionable, seemingly half-baked, snack concepts that have onlookers like, huh? I'm talking about creations such as flaked banana lollipops and soggy Coco Pops hot cocoa, just to name a couple. But things officially hit a new level of absurdity recently when they posted this video for feta cheese and cereal-stuffed avocados.
To no one's surprise, the Internet wasn't having it. No, Kellogg's, you can't make avocado and Corn Flakes a thing. Sorry.
Please enjoy a glimpse of some of my favorite social media commentary on the matter....
"If you ever fall out of love with me, make me this. [tags boyfriend]" -Laura R.
"Right team we need to brainstorm a new exciting way to use cornflakes. Just say whatever comes into your head. No wrong answers." -Tina Y.
"Each time you eat feta like that a Greek person cries." -Miltiadis P.
"I just saw an advert telling me to put corn flakes on avocado. TWITTER STOP ALL THIS" -Kirsty R.
Now, here's the bright side: It really doesn't have to be this way. There are plenty of savory and sweet places to put Corn Flakes (other than a bowl), that actually make sense. If you're really that much of a cereal fan or happen to have a lot of flaked corn cereal you're just dying to use, try these 5 recipes instead:
Use the classic breakfast cereal to make a crispy coating for these delightfully crunchy, family-friendly chicken tenders. Decrease or omit the red pepper if your kids don’t care for the heat.
Smoked ham elevates a standard side dish to be satisfying enough for the main event. We loved adding crushed cereal over top for a crispy crust.
You're just 5 ingredients away from an exceptional dinner--seriously. P.S. the cheesy, butter dipping sauce really makes this dish something special, so don't pass on it.
Creamy meets crunchy in this classic potato casserole. It's simple and can be prepared ahead of time and baked while you finish prepping the rest of the holiday meal. Reviewer Llsuraven recalls, "I tried this recipe at Thanksgiving and everyone in my family LOVED it. I am doing it again this Christmas...but I am adding water chestnuts to it!"
