Celebrate Black Friday by getting blackout on black drinks

Black Friday is this week. That means it’s almost time to leave Thanksgiving dinner early, camp out in the Best Buy parking lot, and get in late-night fistfights with strangers over who has claim to the last 4K TV.  If the “start” of the Christmas season is enough to drive you to drink (and who could blame you?) and you literally don’t care where you get alcohol from, TGI Fridays has something special to offer you.

The vaguely Americana-themed restaurant chain will be offering the “Black Friday Cocktail”, a trendy take on a Long Island Iced Tea that’s packed with enough activated charcoal (about 1/8th of a teaspoon) to turn the drink into a shade of black. If you want to get very drunk in celebration/protest of an artificial, capitalist holiday and try out a substance that’s historically been used to treat accidental poisonings, the Black Friday Cocktail has you covered.

If what Rob Farrington, TGI Fridays’ Director of Bar & Beverage, has to sayis true it was only a matter of time before one of America’s favorite casual dining outposts started pouring a bunch of extra carbon molecules into your drink. “Activated charcoal has been on our radar for a while as a hot trend we wanted to take nationwide. Black Friday presented the perfect opportunity to debut a memorable new cocktail,” he said.

Though it’s been used as a poison control method for some time, activated charcoal has become a hot commodity in health & wellness circles lately because of its supposed ability to absorb excess toxins. Of course, its effects in the Black Friday Cocktail will be immediately counteracted by the potent combination of white rum, vodka, gin, and triple sec you’re ingesting.

Luckily, TGI Fridays has some more straightforward holiday cocktails in the works as well. The festive, Stocking Stuffer and Toasted S’mores are ice-cream based beverages that trade charcoal for decadent sweets. So whether you find yourself in need of an escape from the crowds in Times Square or just a place to drink by yourself in a Christmas sweater with no questions asked, TGI Fridays has you covered this holiday season. Charcoal optional.
