Matice Hotel de Barricas may be the ultimate hotel for tequila lovers
Waking up in a giant tequila barrel sounds like something out of a Jimmy Buffet B-side. But at a hotel located in the Mexican town of Tequila, it’s just business as usual, and that’s part of the allure.
Among its multiple lodging options, the Matices Hotel de Barricas offers guests the opportunity to book nights in giant wooden barrels that are peppered amongst the agave fields used in the on-site production of Casa Cofradia tequilas. According to Supercall, it’s the only hotel located on a working tequila farm and distillery, meaning if you wake up in the middle of any other agave field, you’ve probably had a hell of a night.
But in this case, you don’t need to down a pitcher of margaritas to feel comfortable crashing in a room fashioned after a tequila barrel. Quite the contrary: Guests suggest that each room is large enough to accommodate a king-size bed and a spacious bathroom with a rain shower. And unlike actual tequila which spends its barrel-aging days in darkness, these rooms include large windows so you can gaze out at your agave surroundings.
Beyond its barrel-influenced digs, Matice Hotel de Barricas also reportedly offers plenty of other amenities: tequila production tours, a tasting room, a restaurant and bar. You can even get into the nitty gritty of harvesting your own agave and making your own tequila if you feel so inclined. That said, the town of Tequila offers plenty of other activities, and the hotel offers a shuttle if you find yourself in need of an agave respite. Though if you don’t need a boozy break, one visitor on TripAdvisor said that for just 200 pesos (about $10), the hotel gives you an empty bottle that you can fill with whatever tequila you want from the distillery. So there’s that.
All in all, if you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping in a tequila barrel or spending a night as close to an agave field as possible, well, first, you may want to recalibrate your life dreams, but second, the Matices Hotel de Barricas is likely the best option you’re going to find in the world. And hell, it might even inspire you to write an amazing song about your experience… a song that is definitely not at all a rip-off of a Jimmy Buffet B-side!
