How's your brunch going?
Every weekend, as hordes of hungry diners wait in line for brunch, Extra Crispy will hit the pavement, visiting a neighborhood’s most popular spots and talking to people who love the meal as much as we do. For this installment of Street Meet, Extra Crispy hosted The BreakFestival at Stuyvesant Cove Park in Manhattan, New York, and talked to some attendees.
Kait, 27, and Ian, 31
Extra Crispy: What are you guys drinking right now?
Ian: I’ve got this tart Six Point something? I’m not sure exactly what it’s called.
What was the more IPA beer called?
Ian: Don’t know. We’re the worst interview ever.
Don’t worry about it! You don’t know what you ate, but you’re eating it.
Kait: Yes! The bacon was great!
Ian: The bacon [from Jimmy’s No. 43]. The French toast?
Kait: And apple was delicious.
What do you usually do for brunch?
Kait: We usually go out in the city or out in downtown Yonkers.
What is the brunch scene like out there?
Kait: It’s more Irish pubs near us, so not very many options. We’ll go to an Irish bar, and they serve breakfast.
What’s your go-to breakfast at the Irish bar?
Ian: Whatever looks edible. Eggs, pancakes, Irish bacon.
How is that different than other bacon?
Ian: I don’t know. Tastes a little worse, but you wash it down with a couple beers and it’s good.

Steve: Blueberry beer? Not good
Extra Crispy: Not a fan?
Steve: Needs to come with a warning.
Dave: This is a pale ale, I think.
Shane: No, these are lagers. They’re Six Point lagers. They’re delicious.
What’s been the highlight so far? What would you eat again?
Shane: Bacon. Without a doubt.
James: Though the lemon cake over there. The Hawaiian cake? The French toast was pretty good, too. Anything with maple syrup.
Steve: Special mention to the watermelon drink over there. What’s the drink?
Dave: Oh, the lady who called you girly? [Laughs] That’s on tape.
Steve: The watermelon Bellini. Maybe it’s a bit girly. But lovely. It was fantastic.
Dave: This better be on the website.
Do the four of you go out to brunch often?
James: Oh, we brunch all the time.
Dave: Now with football season coming back up, yeah. Totally.
So kegs and eggs?
Dave: No, we never brunch. What the fuck are you talking about?
Steve: We’re boys who brunch!

Extra Crispy: I heard you don’t usually serve cold brew at Cafe de Cupping.
Dayi: Not yet, no.
So you’re testing it out here?
Dayi: Yes. It’s a very special day for trying out cold brew.
What’s your go-to drink at the store?
J: We mainly serve espresso-based beverages in our shop right now, but people are asking me for iced coffee or something. They want something chocolatey, and now we wanted to try our cold brew to serve. It’s something new to our town. We’re well known for our honey bread. It’s got a French toast feeling but it’s not really French toast. It’s homemade honey butter, a lot of whipped cream. Also, now, it’s kind of a trend to have nitro cold brew, which has a beer texture.
Do you have that at the store?
J: We will have it, maybe October. We’re testing it out. That’s why we’re testing out the cold brew.
You said you don’t do many events like this.
J: No, this one is to test out, and I want to see people’s face after they have a sip of coffee, you know? I just want to surprise them!

Extra Crispy: What are you eating right now?
Kate: I’m eating shark and bake. It is very good.
What else have you eaten today?
Kate: We went to Black Seed Bagel earlier this morning.
Oh, you pre-gamed Breakfestival with a bagel?
Kate: We did. And then we still went and got bialys at Kossar’s.
OK, so at least you didn’t fill up. What have you liked so far?
Emily: The G and Tea [from Owl’s Brew] was very nice. It’s sort of a cold brew tea with a little bit of gin in it, so it’s very refreshing.
What are your thoughts on drinking at brunch in general?
Kate: I’m actually not a big fan of boozy brunch, but that’s mostly because I want to load up on coffee.
Emily: I agree that there is a time and a place for it. If I’m drinking at brunch, like mimosas or bloody marys are nice. Like if it’s definitely a very mixed drink. But I tend to veer away from boozy brunches.
But this is an exception, it seems like?
Emily: I mean, it’s afternoon.

Extra Crispy: How was eating that much French toast without your hands?
Wayne Algenio: That was easy. I do food contests, so this wasn’t that hard. But when we didn’t have liquids, that was hard to swallow.
So what’s the trick to winning a food eating contest?
Just eat fast, and be good at it. I don’t know what else to tell you. [Laughs] Also, I have a good capacity for food, so I’m not even close to full.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten for a contest?
It’s a fertilized duck egg. I hold the record for 40 in five minutes.
Whoa, that’s impressive! So this was, like, a breeze.
This was delicious! Especially when they gave us the syrup. I was like, yes! That’s what it needs! You can’t have French toast without the syrup!

Mia: Yes. Hi, Maxine. This is so delicious, this cod fish taco. What is it? It’s delicious.
So how’s Breakfestival treating you so far?
There’s so much to eat, so much to taste. I’m like a kid in a candy store right now. And good music, too.
