You can now get it for $4 a bottle, not $40

If you’re a fan of mangosteen juice but are frustrated that the beverage can be hard to find, a juice brand called Bali may be the answer you’re looking for. And if you don’t even know what a mangosteen is, they can help you with that too.

First launched in Southern California stores this past spring, Bali bills itself as being the first “retail ready” 100-percent mangosteen juice on the market, purporting to offer a relatively inexpensive alternative to the expensive mangosteen juices you might be used to. “Mangosteen juice has only been sold in the US since 2007 and it’s been online only, not at retail, where it’s often sold as a supplement for up to $40 a bottle,” Bali co-founder Edward Farley explained to FoodNavigator-USA.

So what is this strange elixir? Our own Kat Kinsman—who uses mangosteens as the secret ingredient in her Instant Pot Watermelon Soup—describes them as “the best fruit on Earth.” Inside its thick, purple outer skin, you’ll find smaller white pods that are sweet and juicy and said to resemble flavors like peach or lychee. What makes the fruit so rare is that the vast majority come from places like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, or Vietnam, meaning they’re not always easily found in the US.

Plus, beyond their flavor, mangosteens are beloved for their purported health benefits. They contains compounds known as xanthones which among a laundry list of claims, some people say are anti-inflammatory or can even boost libido.

However, Farley said his brand prefers to just stick to the basics. “We have less sugar than most fruit juices, and the vitamin and antioxidant content is obviously appealing, but we’re not making any ‘this cures this or that’ health claims on the pack,” he was quoted as saying. “It’s more about this is a pure fruit juice with a nice taste.”

The drinks are available in 10-ounce bottles for a suggest retail price of under four bucks at Albertson, Vons, and Pavilions stores around the Southern California area. Farley says the brand has also just expanded to Nevada and Utah and can be found in some independent shops, meaning Bali is available in about 400 locations at this point.
