Jameson Combines Whiskey and Cold Brew, Saves You Some Time
Anyone who’s ever had to gear up for a big day of debauched drinking or needed to take extreme measures to fend off a hangover knows that whiskey and coffee can be a potent morning brew. And while making Irish coffee usually requires some very basic mixology (I vaguely recall using Dunkin as a base the first time I tried the concoction in college), a new, limited-edition offering from Jameson looks like it’ll streamline the process for those who like their morning cup above 0% ABV.
Recently, Ireland’s most famous distiller has made the ingenious decision to combine its famous whiskey and coffee into Jameson Cold Brew. A press release from Irish Distillers describes the 70 proof spirit as Jameson’s triple-distilled whiskey paired with a cold brew extract derived from fair trade arabica beans from Colombia and Brazil. The end result is a “smooth, new Irish whiskey experience, with a bold coffee taste balanced with charred wood on the palate and a warming mouthfeel on the finish.”
Jameson Cold Brew’s existence is a recognition of the long, interconnected history of whiskey and coffee not only in Ireland, but around the globe. With the line between hip coffee shop and trendy cocktail bar increasingly blurred, it seems like the kind of product built for those sorts of day-to-night establishments that take both their beans and booze seriously.
Before you rush out to the local liquor store in search of your new beverage of choice for watching early-morning Gaelic football matches, some bad news: Jameson Cold Brew is a very limited release. In fact, you’ll only find it at the actual Jameson Distillery in Dublin and as a duty-free purchase at the Dublin Airport.
But if you can get your hands on a bottle, its $33 retail price is the equivalent of paying for like five cups of cold brew and then getting a lot of good whiskey for free. Here’s hoping enough tourists buy it that Jameson has no choice but to bring it across the Atlantic for the rest of us.
