BKW by Brooklyn Winery pays tribute to the "David Bowie is" museum exhibition with seven cocktails based on his personas
The final stop on a five-year worldwide tour honoring the life and music of David Bowie, the Brooklyn Museum’s latest and much talked about multimedia exhibit “David Bowie is” offers fans unprecedented access to the artist’s archive. Opening last Friday with ticket packages going for as much as $2,500, the show lets visitors trace the influential musician’s life and career—from his teenage years in England to his life in the Big Apple—by way of around 400 objects. That includes original costumes, handwritten lyric sheets, original album art, photographs, and videos, all pulled from the David Bowie Archive.
To celebrate the opening of the New York City exhibition, Brooklyn-based restaurant BKW by Brooklyn Winery has designed a limited time Bowie-inspired cocktail menu. Honoring the icon’s various creative incarnations, the seven different cocktails are all based on personas from across the singer and songwriter’s decades-long career.
Those interested in sampling from the “Bowie by BKW” menu can expect cocktails like the “Ziggy Stardust,” a sparkling wine mix topped with an orange Jell-O star, the “Jareth the Goblin King,” based on Bowie’s Labyrinth villain and described by amNY as a double-gin cocktail infused with peach bitters, and the "Rebel Rebel"-inspired "Halloween Jack," with curry-spiced tequila and creme de cacao.
From the era of Aladdin Sane to Major Tom (which gets a space-themed, star-sprinkled Scotch whiskey and charcoal-infused mezcal tribute), BKW bartenders Nicole Kanev and Wesely Straton have likely captured your favorite part of Bowie’s unparalleled musical and artistic influence through their exclusive drink list.
This isn’t the first time a one-off BKW drink menu has been created. In fact, “Bowie by BKW” is part of an ongoing partnership between the Williamsburg winery offshoot and the Brooklyn Museum that has produced several other cocktail menus inspired by past exhibitions.
The $13 mixed drinks are available through May at the Crown Heights bar and restaurant, located at 747 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238. You can try them Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to close, starting at 4 p.m. on Fridays, and from Saturday to Sunday beginning at noon.
