Don’t get between a dad and his bacon sandwich
The UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s might have thought they were doing folks a favor when they tweeted out a twist on a classic British recipe, making the seemingly innocuous suggestion that kids should, “Treat Dad like a king this #FathersDay by adding peanut butter to his bacon buttie.” But British dads freaked out, horrified by the idea of being served a bacon buttie with peanut butter for breakfast on Father’s Day. Outraged dads took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with Sainsbury’s sandwich-ruining recipe, further proof that getting between a bacon lover and their breakfast meat online will only lead to trouble.
A traditional bacon buttie is, quite simply, a sandwich that’s mainly made with breakfast meat, and it’s the simplicity of the original that’s part of the appeal. Throw a stack of bacon between two slices of bread with butter and maybe some HP Sauce if you’re feeling frisky. There’s no need to fancy up something that works so well and tastes so good, so British fathers were reasonably confused by the thought of messing with this simple, foolproof formula, especially with a combination as seemingly outrageous as peanut butter and bacon. Who, after all, would be crazy enough to do that?
The answer to that question is Americans. Americans are definitely crazy enough to mix peanut butter and bacon, a combination of flavors popularized by Elvis who famously loved sandwiches made with peanut butter, bacon, and banana. The combo has been remixed to work with way more than just sandwiches at this point, including peanut butter and bacon doughnuts and peanut butter and bacon burgers. You can find recipes for peanut butter and bacon cookies, candied bacon with a peanut butter drizzle, even peanut butter, bacon, and beer brownies. If you can dream of a dish with peanut butter and bacon, chances are good that someone has already probably tried making it here in the good old United States of America.
So sure, messing with a classic bacon sandwich is a dangerous game, but also don’t knock the peanut butter and bacon sandwich until you’ve tried it, British dads.
