Bacon goes great with Cheeseheads
Football already uses plenty of pigskins. (Well, not literally, but let’s just go with it.) Now, the Green Bay Packers have announced a plan that will put even more of the pig to good use: a bacon concession stand at Lambeau Field. Not even Packers fans can live solely on Breakfast Brats—one of last year’s new concession items described by the Green Bay Press-Gazette as “a bratwurst on a maple long john covered with maple kraut, bacon and cheese”—so this year, Green Bay’s Lambeau Field is getting an entire concession stand dedicated not just to any old bacon, but Patrick Cudahy bacon, a Wisconsin-based brand that was founded in 1888 and has been anointed “official bacon of the Green Bay Packers and Lambeau Field.”
At this point, if your team doesn’t have an official bacon, you may want to consider moving your allegiances elsewhere.
The Packers hope to have the bacon concession stand, called the Patrick Cudahy Packhouse, open by the first preseason game on August 12. It will serve up foods like the aptly named Pigskin, “a bacon-wrapped baked potato topped with chili, chopped bacon, cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives, and bacon-crusted cheese curds served with a side of bacon-ranch dressing,” according to a report from ESPN, who I’m guessing doubled its bacon coverage for the decade with this story. The rest of the menu is set to be announced later, probably because after taste-testing the Pigskin, the entire culinary team needed a week or two off to regroup both mentally and physically.
Needless to say, Packers fans went bonkers when Mike Weller, the chairman of the executive board's marketing committee, announced the bacon-themed concession stand during last Thursday’s annual shareholders meeting. Reportedly, the idea of an all-bacon concession stand got the loudest reaction of the day, even besting when the team showed footage of Aaron Rodgers’ game-winning Hail Mary pass that many considered the best play of last season. Maybe instead of a football, the Packers should give Rodgers some sort of bacon cannon instead.
“I didn't realize that Patrick Cudahy would get quite the ovation,” Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said after the meeting. “It's a credit, I guess, to the tastes of Wisconsinites.”
Those looking for its newest outpost in Lambeau Field can head to section 124, where the forthcoming concession stand will be located. Hopefully anywhere in that general vicinity will get some warming, bacon-scented wafts on a cold Wisconsin day.
