They’re a quick and easy snack, but that doesn’t mean peanut butter crackers should taste like cardboard—and several do.

Peanut butter crackers are a staple in life—seemingly always available and quite filling. Perhaps, however, you take their ubiquitous nature for granted, assuming they’re all made equally and taste identical.

That, it turns out, is far from the truth. Like almost any other food, peanut butter crackers taste remarkably different from one another, even if they’re simple—peanut butter and crackers just isn’t complicated snacking arithmetic.

We purchased eight different types of peanut butter crackers, found at grocery stores and gas stations. We tried them individually for taste and texture, scoring them on a scale of one to five.

Best Overall

Nabisco Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches

Nabisco

These crackers scored highest for both taste and texture. They have a heavier hint of salt (and actual salt grains on the crackers) than the others. The salt is set off by a robust nuttiness from the peanut butter. Each cracker has just a hint, nay a whisper, of natural sweetness, where some others were just too sweet for our tastes. The texture is crisp and flaky and doesn’t turn gummy immediately when chewing.

Runner-up

Lance Malt Real Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers

Lance

Lance owns a lot of territory in the cracker aisle, and it’s not hard to understand why. Both of their peanut butter sandwich crackers (the second entry was their Toasty version) faired well. The Malt Crackers missed first place because the texture is a bit softer, less sharp. If you’re watching your salt, you may want to move these to the top spot. Despite having less sodium than the Ritz (180mg vs 310mg), these crackers are nutty and toasty with a natural peanut butter flavor that isn’t overpowered by a sweet cracker.

Best Bite-Size Peanut Butter Crackers

Market Pantry Mini Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers

Target

We also gathered four types of kid-friendly bite-size peanut butter crackers. Even little snackers can appreciate these treats and how easy they are to keep on hand for immediate snacking needs.

The Market Pantry variety was the best bet for your pocketbook—a big box is about $2—and as we noted in our tastings, the bag is significantly fuller compared to other varieties. As far as taste, these little crackers are nutty with a hint of sweetness, and the crackers are neutral enough you can taste the peanut butter. These crackers benefit from a texture that is a just-right balance of crispy and dense. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself grabbing a few from your kid’s snack stash.
