It’s that time of year again. Summer is bringing us a bounty of wonderful, fresh fruit that seems to get overlooked when it comes to beverages. Fruits add flavor and color to most any drink, from fresh raspberries floating in a glass of champagne, to the tart goodness of citrus in a cold margarita, or the cool, sweet mint and lime of the Latin-inspired mojito. For a southern spin on the mojito, try Slushy Watermelon Mojitos from Cooking Light. Not only are they tasty, they are the color of southern summertime.

On a recent trip, I discovered a beautiful, delicious white sangria and a friendly bartender willing to share his recipe: (second from left in photo above)

One bottle good quality white wine (pinot grigio or fruity chardonnay)

¼ cup orange liqueur (Gran Gala or Grand Marnier are good to use)

1 peach, washed and sliced

1 cup white grapes, sliced in half

1 thinly sliced orange

1 cup of strawberries, washed and sliced

1 apple, thinly sliced

In a pitcher, mix the wine and orange liqueur. Add the fruit and stir to combine. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and serve over ice.

Looking for something without high octane? Try this yummy punch created by food maven Paula Deen that I like to serve as a fruity non-alcoholic option. One tip, though--I do not use the 3 cups of sugar that she suggests. It’s sweet enough on its own, but you decide for yourself. (Hint: It’s great for baby showers).
