This fruit mixture also makes a great strudel filling.

  • 2 medium-size Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 firm ripe pear, peeled and diced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dried cherries
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon finely chopped orange rind
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped lemon rind
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped dried apricots
  • 1 tablespoon currants
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon applejack (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice


  1. Combine all ingredients in large saucepan; stir well. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, 15 minutes or until apple and pear are tender, stirring often.
