Vanilla-Pomegranate Italian Soda

Pomegranate juice is chock-full of antioxidants, but it can be very tart. Vanilla syrup mellows the tartness, creating a sophisticated soda.

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups seltzer, chilled
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice, chilled
  • Ice


  1. 1. Combine sugar and 1/4 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Cool 30 minutes or until room temperature.
  2. 2. Combine cooled vanilla syrup, seltzer, and pomegranate juice in a pitcher. Fill each of 4 glasses with ice; divide soda among glasses.
  3. Tasty Twist Use this recipe as inspiration to make your own Italian sodas: swap the pomegranate juice for another intense juice, like cherry or blueberry. You can also change the syrup flavor with extracts or herbs.
