While this simple Vanilla Buttercream is the perfect frosting for crafting our Unicorn Cake (pictured above), it's also a fantastic go-to recipe for anytime you need to frost a cake. Layer cakes and cupcakes alike, this classic buttercream frosting will aways be a crowd-pleaser and makes for a great vanilla base when you plan to dress a cake up with additional garnishes, like fresh fruit or chocolate shavings.
1 (8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 cup (8 oz.) salted butter, softened
2 (16-oz.) pkg. powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon table salt
2 tablespoons whole milk, divided
How to Make It
Beat cream cheese and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and 1 tablespoon of the milk until blended and smooth. If frosting is too thick, add remaining 1 tablespoon milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until smooth. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy.
