  • 2 T oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 c celery, chopped
  • 1 lb gound beef
  • 1 large bottle tomato juice
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 c boiling water
  • 2 T chili powder
  • 2 T cold water
  • 1/4 t salt
  • 1 t sugar
  • 1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 t celery seed


  1. 1. Cook onions and garlic until tender in hot oil. Add meat; cook uncovered until meat browns. Add boiling water, tomatoes, chili powder (mixed with cold water to make paste), salt, sugar and celery seed. Add tomato juice.
  2. 2. Simmer covered one hour; uncover and simmer 30 minutes longer.
  3. 3. Add beans and heat through.
