Grandma Diser's Caramel Frosting

My grandmother used this frosting on her Spice Cake and Sour Cream Chocolate Cake. I loved licking the bowl. The flavors and the smells of these cakes with this frosting made for wonderful childhood memories!

  • 1 cup(s) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup(s) white sugar
  • 6 tablespoon(s) butter
  • 1/3 cup(s) milk


  1. Combine all ingredients in a heavy pan.
  2. (Grandma always had Guersney cows milk, which had a lot of cream. I usually use whole milk or sometimes add just a little whipping cream to 2% milk.)
  3. Cook to a rolling boil.
  4. Boil one minute.
  5. Pour into a metal mixing bowl to cool a little.
  6. Beat with electric mixer until it looks creamy instead of opaque.
