Basic Layer Cake from Cake Mix

This is my 'almost homemade' cake. It holds up well to decorator icing and has a nice, moist texture. Flavor of cake mix and puddings can be mixed and matched.

  • 1 package(s) cake mix (Duncan Hines/no pudding in mix)
  • 1 package(s) instant vamilla pudding
  • 4 eggs, large
  • 1 cup(s) water
  • 1/3 cup(s) canola oil


  1. 1.Preheat oven to 325 degrees, soak cake pan strips. Prepare cake pans, lightly wring out strips and wrap around pans. Bake about 40 minutes for 9 in cake or until tester comes out clean. (note this temperature and time is different from the box, but produces a cake that does not have a large dome in the center. Cool and frost.

  2. 2.For smaller portions: (6 cupcakes or 1 small 7-8 inch layer) divide recipe into 4 portions as follows: 1cup cake mix, 1/4 pkg pudding mix, 1 egg, 1/4 cup water and 1 tablespoon oil.
