Baking Powder Biscuits

  • 500 mL all-purpose flour
  • 20 mL baking powder
  • 2 mL salt
  • 125 mL shortening firm
  • 175 mL milk


  1. Sift dry ingredients into mixing bowl. Cut in firm shortening with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture has appearance of fine crumbs. Add milk, a small amount at a time to the dry mixture, stirring with a fork or a spoon until the dought forms a ball around the spoon. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead gently 10 times. Pat or roll out dough to 1.5 to 2 centimetres thick. Cut with floured cookie cutter with even pressure. Let stand on ungreased baking sheet for 10 minutes before baking. Bake at 220 C for 15 - 20 minutes, depending on size of biscuits. Cool.
