In a large frying pan over medium heat, sauté onion in olive oil until golden. Add Italian sausage and cook until browned and no pink shows. Add tomato paste, sauté for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add diced tomatoes and beans. Stir to combine and bring to simmer. Add chicken broth, stir well. Add rosemary, black pepper and red pepper flakes to taste, if using. Simmer over low heat until thickened, 15 minutes or so. Stir in fresh spinach until wilted. Serve in bowls with Parmesan cheese shavings.
