This decadent turtle trifle gets its flavor inspiration from classic turtle candy and features marscapone cheese, whipping cream, vanilla, pecan pie chunks, toasted pecans, and fudge cand caramel toppings.
8 ounces mascarpone cheese, softened*
1 1/2 cups whipping cream
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 (2-lb.) frozen pecan pie, thawed and cut into 1-inch cubes
1/3 cup chocolate fudge topping
1/3 cup caramel topping
1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted
How to Make It
Beat mascarpone cheese, whipping cream, and vanilla extract in a large bowl at medium speed with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer, using the whisk attachment, 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth and firm.
Place half of pie cubes in bottom of a 4-qt. trifle dish or tall, clear 4-qt. glass bowl. Spread half of whipped cream mixture over pie cubes. Drizzle with half each of chocolate fudge topping and caramel topping. Sprinkle with half of chopped pecans. Repeat layers.
Cover and chill at least 1 hour or up to 8 hours.
*1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese may be substituted.
Note: For testing purposes only, we used Edwards Georgia Pecan Pie, Smucker's Chocolate Fudge Topping, and Smucker's Caramel Flavored Topping.
Mascarpone is rich double or triple cream cheese made from cow's milk.
I feel like a real boob. I have been cooking all my life and think of myself as a good cook who rarely has a failure. I don't have a stand mixer. I used a hand mixer and beat it for over ten minutes. It never did get to a "firm" consistency. I wish the author had made it a bit more clear on what "firm" means. Should it look like pudding? Should it "peak" like whipped cream does? Is it possible to make this if one does not have an expensive stand mixer?
I don't understand all the 5-star reviews for this recipe. It's OVERKILL on steroids. Nauseatingly sweet and heavy. I ate about a quarter cup of this at our family's Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and I felt like I would hurl.
I am a wannabe cook - I try and try but my dishes don't ever look like the picture. UNTIL. . . this one. It is easy to make and attractive. I have made it twice and both times the recipe received rave reviews and compliments. It is a keeper!!!!
FABULOUS! One of the best recipes on the website! Everyone BEGS for this recipe when I make it. I use cream cheese and double the amount of cream cheese/whipped cream mixture, as proportionally it looks/tastes better. If you have not yet tried this, make it soon! You won't regret it!
A delicious and beautiful dessert. I made it for a Bible Study group and got rave reviews. I made it just as printed, didn't substitute a thing. But I can see a few changes to lower the cost, may try that next time.
This is the most delicious dessert I have had in my life. I used the entire jar of chocolate fudge and carmel topping and didn't think I had over done it. I made it for a luncheon and everyone wanted the recipe. It was HUGE hit. I would fix this dessert just for special occasions and not for everyday meals. It is especially good for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but can be used at any time of the year. I did NOT use fat free/sugar free options. Hint: when mixing the whipped cream, cream cheese and vanilla you will need to put all the ingredients in a VERY deep bowl to keep it contained or it will splatter.
This was the biggest hit of my office Christmas dinner. Everyone was excited to hear that I would bring it again this year. They requested it again. Easy to make and looks beautiful on the table. I used cream cheese and it was Yummy.
