Toasted Doughnuts

Yield about 1 1/2 dozen

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • Sifted powdered sugar (optional)

How to Make It

  1. Combine sugar and melted shortening in a large mixing bowl; mix well. Add eggs and milk; beat well.

  2. Combine flour, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt; add to creamed mixture, stirring well. Turn dough out onto a heavily floured surface; roll to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut dough with a floured doughnut cutter.

  3. Drop doughnuts, a few at a time, into deep hot oil (375°). Fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain doughnuts well on paper towels.

  4. Split doughnuts in half crosswise. Place on baking sheets cut side up; brush with butter.

  5. Broil 4 inches from heating element 2 minutes or until lightly browned. Sprinkle doughnut halves with powdered sugar, if desired.
