French toast: not really French and not really toast. But it still rules. You can cover it in berries and literally any sweet food on the planet except for maybe Good & Plentys, but who knows, try it. Here’s a super basic, super easy French toast recipe that you should think of as your blank canvas for experimentation. Before you attempt a pumpkin-stuffed French toast or a decadent foie gras French toast, you need to learn how to crawl—mouth first into this iconic breakfast recipe.
In a frying pan on medium heat, melt a little butter but be careful not to burn it—that’ll make Paula Deen mad, y’all!
Dip each slice of bread into the bowl and swoosh it around to ensure it soaks up the egg mixture. Raise the slice with a fork, let excess mixture drip into the bowl and fry that bad boy in the hot pan. Do this with every slice, unless you enjoy soggy-raw-egg bread. And in that case, you’re weird.
Flip each slice when the bread is slightly brown.
Build a stack of French toast goodness with the cooked slices. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and “accidentally” spill a whole bottle of maple syrup over this masterpiece.
