While it's not exactly a 'special occasion' type dish, I would none-the-less give it four stars. I used leeks instead of onion, because I had two small ones I needed to use up. I used turkey stock leftover from the recent Thanksgiving turkey instead of chicken stock. And I threw in a couple of crumbled up bacon strips because they were cooked for a brussels sprouts recipe that got shelved when I discovered the brussels sprouts were past their prime. Oh, and a bit of chopped thyme, just because. ;)

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 pound turnips, peeled and shredded
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Preparation
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add onion, and sauté 3 to 5 minutes or until tender.
- Stir in turnips and remaining ingredients. Cook, stirring often, 20 minutes or until turnips are tender. (Turnips will turn a light brown-caramel color as they cook.)
