I didn't put the topping on, and still thought this was absolutely delicious! Lots of flavor and I thought the sweet potato and apple really went well together. We had it with a chicken I roasted in our rotisserie. This dish will be made in my household again and again!

Very heathly and delicious. The one of the best sweet potato recipes I have found. Not nearly as sweet as most sweet potato recipes which is what makes it so good. I agree, it is good with our without the topping. I would grate some fresh nutmeg on the top if you skip the bread crumbs.

Simple, delicious and not too sweet. I didn't bother making the breadcrumb topping this time; just mixed some nutmeg in with everything else, but I would probably make it for company just to make it a little fancier. My one-year old gobbled it up and begged for more when he saw me putting away the leftovers.

Enjoyed this, though I think it would have been too plain without the breadcrumb topping, so surprised that others skipped it. I would use more apple so the dish is 50-50 apple to sweet potato. I also found that the top of the gratin got too dried out, and would use more liquid in the pan. Enjoyed that it was only subtly sweet, not sugary like most sweet potato dishes.
