Spicy Honey-Brushed Chicken Thighs

My husband absolutely loves this recipe! It has become a staple for us--it's quick, healthy and really yummy. Great on the grill, too. I've taken to omitting the garlic powder in the spice rub and adding a teaspoon or so of crushed fresh garlic to the honey mixture---but we *really* like garlic.

We've made this many times and we love it. Sometimes we turn up the spices a bit, but watch out! It can get pretty hot!

This was super easy. I used drumsticks and thighs bone in and subed smoked Paprika and me and the hubby loved it. It has a spicy (not too hot), interesting flavor and I will make this again.

Excellent! I skipped the vinegar and added an extra drizzle or two of honey to tone down the red pepper that my family's not crazy about. Also used an AllClad skillet instead of a grill. Covered the skillet a few times while cooking to keep the thighs from drying out, which made a lot of broth. The last few minutes I removed the lid and let it all cook down to a syrupy sauce. There are no leftovers tonight! The ability to make slight adjustments to accommodate on-hand ingredients, equipment, or personal tastes is one of the things I love about Cooking Light recipes; the basics are always so solid that deviating from the original recipe never sacrifices its quality! I'll definitely make this again and have no problem serving to guests. Cooking Light Rocks!!

This is a fantastic, tasty and fast chicken dish. If I'm not sure what to make this is a great compromise!

  • Megco33 Posted: 03/26/10

This one's a no-brainer. I prefer chicken thighs anyhow -- they've got a lot more flavor, even if you serve them plain. But this glaze comes together in a minute and it really pumps up the volume, so why should you ever serve your family plain chicken thighs?

Easy, tasty chicken dish. I suggest lining the baking dish with aluminum foil so cleanup is easy, the sauce is very sticky -- but good! I'd also double the sauce next time.

The Spicey Honey-Brushed chicken was very flavorful and easy to make. And it looks pretty too, which makes it an excellent recipe for entertaining. We will make it for everyday meals too. My first time broiling, so there was a lot of smoke.

  • nokids77 Posted: 11/15/08

WOW! This was a great recipe! I used chicken breast tenderloins because I dislike dark meat. I also baked them instead of broiling them, as other reviewers suggested. I don't like to use my broiler and I didn't want to take the chance of making a sticky burned mess with the honey. My boyfriend and I both loved how they turned out! I will definitely make this again!

This recipe tastes great and is very easy. Great to have in the rotation. Both my husband and I enjoy it. I made it with the Summer Black Bean and Pasta Salad on this site, which complimented it very well.

Delicious and easy! I made this recipe as directed except I grilled the chicken. I also used 4 drumsticks, 2 thighs, and 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I probably could have had 1 1/2 times the seasonings though. The honey and vinegar mixture was more than enough.

Anyone checking out this recipe, please try this ....you won't be sorry!!!! This was one of the best recipes I've tried in a long time! The chicken was moist and full of flavor! It took no time to put all the spices together. My husband said to mark this recipe as on of his favorites!

Super quick and easy. I was grilling pineapple on the BBQ, so I decided to grill this as well. Sprayed the grill with PAM beforehand, and the chicken turned out great! Quick, easy, tasty! Perfect!

Delicious! I definitely recommend this! I kicked up the heat more using red pepper flakes. We ate ours with brown rice & a frozen veggie blend that included black beans & corn. My hubby says I should make it again for sure.

I made this exactly as written except I used bone-in thighs. This is fast and has excellent flavor. Next time I'll kick up the heat a little, but as is it was very tasty. Only three stars because the guide says four stars means worthy of a special occasion, and this is a weeknight comfort food type of dish.

Made this on a whim when I realized I didn't have the ingredients for the planned dinner. Super fast and easy and yummy, too. I used regular paprika this time, but next time I'll use smoked paprika for extra flavor. Served it with whole wheat couscous and broccoli. I thought it would be a bit spicy for our preschoolers, so I made one thigh with no rub and only the honey-vinegar mixture.

  • Rach1102 Posted: 04/01/11

This chicken recipe is amazing! The spice rub gives it a nice kick, and the sweetness of the honey compliments it so well. I served this with a side of sauteed summer squash and zucchini. I will definitely be making this one again!

This is really, really good. I'd have rated it 3 stars (good solid recipe) but I didn't want to degrade its rating. However, it IS a good solid go-to recipe; great for a weeknight but good enough for company. I started on the grill, but ran out of gas so I finished them under the broiler. Turned out fine. Served it with boxed noodles (lazy) and a vinaigrette slaw. Yum. If I made any changes (probably won't), I might add just a touch more vinegar to give the glaze a bit more punch. We had glaze left so I brought it to the table - really tasty drizzled on the cooked chicken. Will definitely make this again.

This was incredibly delicious! My piece was a bit spicy so next time I would tame the heat a little so that way my toddler could try it. I couldn't believe how quick and easy this was to prepare and clean up. I would serve this to guests or just for a weeknight dinner. I made mashed potatoes to go with it. Yummy!

Excellent way to cook chicken. We used skinless chicken thighs with the bone in - I think that makes a tastier dish. Also, we used just a smidgeon of red pepper and barbecued it instead of using the broiler. Served it with rice pilaf, a salad, and fresh corn.

This is a great dish! I make it a few times a month. The best thing about it besides how great it tastes is how easy it is! It is great on those nights that you have very little time for dinner and don't want to order out. This recipe is perfect the way it is but you can go a little heavier with the spice if you like a little kick.

  • runnerlou Posted: 06/04/09

This is the easiest, tastiest, no fail chicken recipe I have ever made. Make it exactly as written (I only use 6 chicken thighs rather than 8, but other than that), and you will be thrilled. We tried it on Sunday, and I made it again tonight. I've already recommended it to several people to. It's perfect.

Ick... We were disappointed. The flavors in this just don't meld. Maybe it was the paprika I used (Hungarian)? Would not make this again. The reason for ** is that my bf said on day 2 the leftovers were a bit tastier.

This was quite tasty. I thought it might be over-spiced but that was nicely balanced by the honey mixture. Instead of broiling this I sautéed it in a cast iron skillet with non-stick spray, which worked just fine. My boyfriend really liked this and it will become a usual. I would suggest serving this with a side salad and perhaps some corn on the cob. If you are feeling especially fancy than toss on some orzo with salt and butter or olive oil.

Fast and Delicious! From the start to finish this recipe takes at most 15 minutes! Like another reader, I used boneless-skinless chicken breasts and I also pounded them out to make them thinner since I don't like my chicken really thick. The cooking method worked perfectly even using thinner breasts! The chicken was juicy, spicy, sweet and awesome! I had no paprika so I just threw some hot sauce on the breasts before I put them in the dry rub. Also I had to make a bit more rub, atleast double what it says, to cover the large chicken breasts.

This recipe is pne of my faves. I have cooked it as directed, with skinless chicken breasts, and with bone in chicken leg quarters (with skin) and they all turned out fantastic. I skip the vinegar drizzle the chicken with honey. Also, when using skin-on meats I use my rotisserie oven instead of broiling them.

Whew, Mama, these are fabulous. I mistakenly increased the cayenne from 1/2 tsp. to 1 1/2 tsp. They were still to die for. I will definitely be doing these again and again and again. You can't miss with this one. Thanks for the great dinner. Don't fix this for wimps and small children, it's for the big kids! I definitely increased the time under the broiler because in my oven I have to drop the shelf down to keep from burning them.

Very good!! My husband loved it so much he ate everything left over that night!! We like things spicy, so I added about a 1/4t of red pepper to the recipe based on some other reviews. We also used chicken breasts and cooked it on the grill. Since it was a little more spicy, we added a thin slice of Gruyere cheese on top. Very good, will be making this again since my husband inhaled it!

We love trying new recipes and this is definitely a keeper – and our new favorite! My husband was concerned that the honey would make it too sweet; but, offset by the vinegar, it was a nice foil for the spices (which form a lovely crust)! We also like to vary the spices sometimes. I generally cook a dozen thighs at a time, so we have plenty for quick meals during the week. Serve with fresh green beans and a garden salad. Yum!

I LOVED this dish - it's the perfect mixture of sweet and tangy - used a little extra red pepper flake, but I like my chicken with a "kick". Also, didn't have the apple vinegar so I used champagne vinegar and it was still amazing. Shared with all my friends this morning.

It impressed my mother-in-law and, let me tell you, she is one hard nut to crack. It was a little spicy for my young kids, but they ate it and liked it. I made it with wild rice, a side of green beans and a spinach salad.

I used three large chicken breasts and chopped them into pieces, then cooked in the skillet with a little olive oil and a bit of chicken broth when that was soaked up. This was a fantastic recipe! Just enough spice for me, and putting it over rice with the leftover pan juice and a bit of the sweet and sour made it perfect. I used this for just the two of us, but it would work great for a larger group as well.

  • DivadelaCocina Posted: 03/05/11

Solid, weeknight recipe that comes together in a jiffy. There were no exotic ingredients, so I had all I needed at home. The glaze and spices made the outside of the chicken very flavorful, but the inside of the chicken was pretty bland. I had no ground red pepper, so I used twice the amount of red pepper flakes. It gave it a nice kick. Next time, I'll let the chicken sit with the spice rub 1/2 hour, before grilling it. I will also grill it in a bake pan, rather than a grill pan, so the glaze does not drain away from the chicken while it cooks. We enjoyed this recipe, and I will definitely make again-- but not for a special occasion.

I hate to start off with a negative review, but I signed on to myrecipes.com specifically to give feedback on this recipe. It sounded good, and with so many 5-star recipes, I was sure I was making a winner. There are very few foods that I dislike, and I usually enjoy most recipes, but my husband and I really didn't like this chicken recipe. We eat a lot of chicken but we're not used to having chicken thighs, so perhaps that was the issue. We didn't like the texture or the taste. We won't make this recipe again, or even play around with adaptations.

This was really liked by my husband who loves spicy food, I didn't even add as much as it says though because I can't handle that much. It was very flavorful and the chicken was moist, my Dad liked it a lot, he was impressed! I actually ended up chopping up the chicken instead and letting it simmer longer in the sauce instead of broiling, which I think really helped.

Outstanding! Very easy and quick! Have made this many many times both grilled and broiled. For me the broiled turned out better. You can adjust the ground red pepper if you don't like a lot of heat. I throw my seasonings in a Gallon baggie and toss in the chicken. Turns out great every time!

LOVE this! I found it in a CL magazine and have used it many times. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it's a bit messy.

This was so yummy!!!! Grilled instead of broiled. Very easy also. Put the rub a couple hours before grilling. It is a little spicy for those of you who don't like a little heat. Will try on breast next since it's sometimes hard to find boneless, skinless thighs - which I refuse to eat.

I made this last night for dinner. It was FANTASTIC - the flavor was terrific (not too sweet despite the honey) and it was VERY quick to make - faster than the salad we made to go with it. My 3 year-old and my husband both gobbled it right down. I could do this on a weeknight no problem. Didn't find it too spicy at all, but my chile powder may have been "old", and I subbed regular ground pepper for the ground red (wasn't going to the grocery store for 1 item). Will absolutely make this again. (Thanks to darmonty for the timing tip for grilling.)

So good. Very deserving of 5 stars. A nice mix of sweet and spicy. I cooked them on an outdoor grill, first directly over the grates. Before adding and brushing with honey i moved the thighs to an aluminum pan and finished cooking over a lower heat. We could not stop eating them

Boyfriend was surprised how much he liked it. We generally don't like sweet meats...no teriyaki glaze on our teriyaki kind of people. I halved the recipe and added a tablespoon of soysauce to my honey vinegar mixture, as well as a touch more vinegar than proportioned. Result was a slightly sweet but complementary flavor with the subtle spices in the dish. We didn't find it too spicy, and perfectly easy recipe. I used foil on top of cast iron pan for easy clean up while broiling.

Delicious! Perfect blend of spices. I typically ONLY eat chicken breasts but went out on a limb and was pleasantly surprised! The boneless, skinless chicken thighs were so moist and the rub created a little crispiness. It was so easy and so quick. Great for midweek meal. Served with brown rice and sugar snap peas

I have made this at least once a week since getting the recipe a month ago, have emailed it to all my friends, and stand around the kitchen patting myself on the back. It's the ideal- something delicious but sinfully easy to make. I wanted something healthy but delicious, and easy to stock up on. It doesn't require any odd ingredients, the recipe is perfectly timed, and it works well with chicken breasts (which I usually cut in half, just to be sure they get coated in spice). This spice mix is a winner!!!

Easy to make and very flavorful! It was a great balance of sweet and a tiny bit spicy. I accidentally bought bone in skinless thighs but I just let them cook a few extra minutes and otherwise followed the recipe exactly. I made with some roasted fingerling potatoes and a spinach side from cooking light (spinach with a white wine vinaigrette). I'd recommend!

This recipe was a big disappointment. I have made many Cooking Light recipes over the years. I always look for the recipes with the 4 & 5 star ratings and have had great experiences with all but just a few and this is one of them. I made this recipe as indicated but used half of the cayenne since I was serving it to my kids. I cooked it for the specified amount of time but I would say the chicken end up a little overcooked. After just a couple of bites, I couldn't eat any more. My husband and boys ate theirs but agreed that it wasn't very good. We did not like the flavors of the spice mix and the honey really didn't do anything to help the taste.

  • jmeleeS Posted: 11/18/11

I really really wanted to like this recipe, but somehow it just fell flat. I would try this one again with chicken breast or pork - something a little leaner than dark meat chicken. Thighs are juicy as they are, and don't need a whole of of pizzazz in my opinion, so perhaps the meat is just paired wrong for my tastes with the honey. The spice rub ended up coating 1/2 the thighs with the whole of the rub, leaving the rest of the thighs to have less flavor and taste more sweet from the honey rub. IF if make again (and it's a big if as of right now), I would not pair with chicken thighs and would double the rub / spices to coat all of the meat evenly

I made the recipe with breasts and baked them at high heat (~450 deg F), because I didn't have a broiling pan and the instructions on my oven said that without a proper boiling pan, the drippings could ignite. I liked them. My dinner companion loved them - and had seconds. I will make this again, but will probably use a bit less chili powder. I thought the flavor was a bit overwhelming. The rub followed by the sauce worked out really well. The chicken was really pretty! After making a second time (this time broiling), I stand by my original review. I'd advise lining your pan with foil - it gets pretty mess. And really stick to the cooking times, or your chicken will end up a bit dry. Its not the absolute best chicken, but its pretty good - especially for something that can be thrown together in 20 minutes.

Made this for the second time last night, and it did not disappoint. It's easy, if a little messy, and a crowd-pleaser. The mixture of flavors is fabulous, and the dark meat of the chicken thighs ensures a juicy piece of meat. I served it with homemade mac-n-cheese and sauteed green beans and shallots for a nice, comforting meal on a December night.

Omgoodness, this was so easy, fast and sooo good! Made this tonight for some friends; I have to give them the recipe now. :) A unanimous YUM from all! Served with steamed rice and CL's Sesame-Soy Green Beans, subbing broccoli for the green beans. I used two breast fillets and deboned two thighs at full spice recipe, smoked paprika, 1 1/4 tsp of cayenne (just the right amount of heat!) instead of chili powder. Let chicken mix with spices for about three hours in the fridge. Used half of honey mixture. I love the combination of the spices and a touch of sweetness from the honey. Cook time was spot on, and the chicken was very juicy and flavorful. Just right for a dinner for four. I would gladly make again (probably many times!) and be proud to serve to company. Excellent chicken recipe! Thank you, David Bonom and CL!!!

SO YUMMY! First off, I hate chicken thighs and talk about unhealthy. Instead I divided up a chicken breast into equal portions of a thigh (so you don't have to change cooking time and heat) and followed the recipe exactly. Amazing! My best friend made them with the thighs after eating mine and said the breasts were just better overall. Whatever your choice, its wonderful tasting.

Excellent combination of sweet and spicy. We liked it with the boneless thighs, but it was even better with tenderloins, cut into "nuggets." The only change I had to make was to take the nuggets out of the pan and toss them in the honey glaze, as it was too complicated to brush the glaze on.

I had a lot of hopes for this recipe and it didnt turn out as great as I would have liked. The chilli powder was overpowering, and it has a very distinct taste that comes out in the chicken. Next time I would swap out the chilli powder for cayenne pepper, use chicken breasts instead, and make more of a honey BBQ time sauce that I can add more of.

This recipe is absolutely awesome. My girlfriend doesn't usually like spicy foods, but I pretty much followed the recipe to a T and she and I both loved it. Even our 2-year-old liked it! The only thing I do differently is bake it instead of broiling it. But that's just because my broiler doesn't work quite right. It's definitely a keeper, and one that I will continue to make in the future.

This was so good! I didn't have ground red pepper so I used red pepper flakes. I was using chicken breasts instead of thighs (healthier), so I butterflied them to the same thickness as a chicken thigh so they would cook evenly. I made 1 1/2 times the amount of spice and honey-vinegar sauce and it was just about perfect for the amount of chicken I had (3 large breasts). Loved the combination of flavors, and the quick cooking under the broiler really sealed the juices into the chicken. It does not make great leftovers, however, so try to make only what you will use for one night. This will definitely be going in our regular menu rotation.

My kids loved this. It had great flavor, I made one ingredient adjustment by using half the ground red pepper. I made this with 2 large bone- in chicken breasts and put seasoning under the skin but left it on for cooking. I broiled 5 minutes each side, switched to bake for about 30 min at 350 until the meat almost read 165 with a meat thermometer and broiled each side again after adding the honey vinegar mixture. I will make this again! I did not have a broiler pan but used a cast iron pan for cooking as well...

I have made this three times in the last couple of months. The flavor is excellent--both sweet and hot. I made it once on the grill and twice baked in the oven at 425. I think it is a great complement to the tender texture and richer flavor of chicken thighs. I did use a bit more honey in the sauce to offset the heat.

These were excellent. I was probably a little heavy handed on the spices so it was only enough for the first 4 thighs, but I just mixed the spices again and make the rest. The honey/vinegar sauce had a really nice flavor. Had a little kick but not to spicy.

Quick and Easy with a dash of delicious! YES PLEASE! no wonder this is a popular dish it was absolutely tasty! The only thing that I did different was add a extra 2 second count of apple cider to really set a good contrast to the sweet and spicy and it was perfect. My other suggestion is to dust the chicken with half the seasoning and to rub/massage it in with your hands. Then dust it with the rest and pat/rub it in. Cant beat a 12min chicken dinner that is this good! TOTALLY recommend!
