Shepherd's Pie

This classic dish is usually made with lamb, but it also works well with pork.


  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrot
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 3 cups cubed, cooked pork
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (made from a box)
  • 1⁄2 cup grated cheddar cheese

How to Make It

  1. Prep time: 10 minutes
    Cook time: 10 minutes on stove; 40 minutes in oven

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

    In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery, and cook until soft, about 3 minutes.

    Add flour, tomato paste, and broth, and whisk together. Simmer for 7 minutes. Add meat and stir to combine. Spoon into a 2-quart baking dish or individual ramekins.

    Spread mashed potatoes on top and bake 30 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese; bake 10 to 15 minutes more, until cheese is melted and golden.
